Live the Life You've Imagined! Energy - Give a little bit.
Lauren Chandler
Posted by LKChandler on Dec 05, 2008
Everyone experiences those situations or days when you just don't feel like doing something. Obviously there are times when our mind and body need rest, and it is important to acknowledge that and take the rest you need so you can repair and grow and become stronger. However, it is not always wise to live by your feelings as they are controlled by your conscious self therefore not truly indicating your present self. The old adage of first giving to receive is now re-emerging throughout society and it holds true in terms of energy. We must first give some energy in order to receive more. Many times in my life, sport and business I have not felt like taking action on a given task even though I knew it would bring me closer to acquiring my goals. For the purpose of this article and because sport is my playground for learning life's lesions, I am going to speak in terms of Rock Climbing. Take this information and then apply to your own personal goals and situations.Put simply, to become a better Rock Climber athlete, I need to grow. I need to develop many aspects of my mind along with the many aspects of my physical body. All that I have achieved in climbing thus far has been the result of the mind and body energy I gave. I want to focus on two main points in giving energy to grow with the first being the energy I gave in training study and the second being the energy I gave when it came time to perform race day / exam.To get the energy to complete a particular climb originally too difficult for me, I had to give lots of energy in training my mind and body so that I became stronger in all aspects and capable of doing that climb. Many times I have not felt like training, but developing a strong desire for my goal helped me to ‘Just Do It' And when I made the initial step, suddenly I was filled with motivation and the energy to complete my training and to do it well. As a result, my feelings changed, as I gave the energy, I got much more back.Once I strengthened my mind and body and knew I was now capable of completing that climb, I had to put my new strength into action. Think of it like training for a marathon and then putting your skills together on race day. After a long, busy week, an early start Saturday morning and a two hour drive to my climb, many thoughts enter my mind… ‘I went to bed a bit late last nigh, I feel pretty tired', ‘maybe I trained too hard and didn't rest enough this week, my arms feel heavy', ‘what if I miss the hold, I don't feel like taking that fall today…' Where does all this come from? Our inner critics Listening to these thought and feelings, makes me want to change my mind and wait until I feel more energetic. Truth is, we are not always going to have that day where everything is perfect and feels right, we have to make itIn these situations the first step I take is to tell these voices to STOP I tell them to go away, I choose not to listen and I choose to ignore the associated feelings. I then take a few deep breaths and relax and replace the negative thoughts with my desire to achieve my goals and the mentality to ‘Just Do It' Nine times out of ten once I start climbing and warming up, my feeling change. I perform and I achieve my goal. I give the energy - the positive energy, I learn the associated lesson and I continue to apply this wisdom in all areas of my life AND I WINContinue reading more great articles at www.shinewellbeing.com.au and sign up to receive our free monthly newsletter
